When i use disk clean up you can choose to clean the debug dump files. What are these and are they safe to clean away?

If Windows traps a program failure it can write the memory space of the failing program to disk along with a shed load of other status information for analysis using a range of debugging tools.
These files are known as dump files, memory dumps, debug dump files etc. etc.
For all intents and purposes they are a total waste of space on a typical users machine and are safe to delete.
