i've managed to log on using the old style key board connections, and i've checked my usb connections as suggested in another forum...nearly solved, but its saying they're fine?! i've run trouble shooter n still no joy.

Try Uninstalling all the USB hubs/controllers from Device Manager and re-booting.

Another point is that you may have inadvertently tried to insert your external hard drive's USB plug the wrong way up and, perhaps, damaged the motherboard...:-(

What O/S are you using?

Control panel > Device Manager >

Expand the usb ENTRY.

Delete All entries

Allow Windows to find the USB ports

(With your external device DISCONNECED

Worst case scenario is you have overloaded the port and blown the non replaceable fuse on the motherboard.

However a PCI usb board will still work if you have a spare PCI slot.

Cheers guys, hope its not the mother board one cuz that don't sound fun??hehe

i've tried the other option - deleted usbs then these little question marks came on so i reinstalled them but they're still not workin??

Ah man that really doesn't sound good, although it does kinda make sense - had my keyboard mouse n printer on usb's when plugged in the external.....DOH!!!

No muppets here! O/s = Operating system:

XP, Vista etc.

If that re-install didn't work you may need to:

Shut down.

Reboot, and tap the DEL (delete) key while the machine boots

You are then in your BIOS screen.

Scroll down (MAKE NO CHANGE YET)

Find the entry for USB Legacy Devices

Enable it.
