DDR2 RAM - which pair of slots to use?

New Mobo takes DDR2 memory - fitted in same size, same spec, in pairs, OK?
But into which of the 4 x slots do I fit my 2 x 512Mb modules?
The h/b for this ASUS M2N4-SLI says that DIMM slots are arranged as:
Channel A=DIMM_A1 & DIMM_A2
Channel B=DIMM_B1 & DIMM_B2
There are two yellow slots; DIMM_A1 & DIMM_B1 and two black, A2 & B2.
What should the arrangement be?
The two pieces in one channel or one in each channel A and B?
(I'm not dimm, just used to PC133 only!)

One in each of the yellow slots.

If the memory is a matched pair it will then run in dual channel mode. This gives twice the memory bandwidth which can improve performance in some applications.

If you want to add more RAM then add a second matched pair to the black slots.

If you use Channel A=DIMM_A1 & DIMM_A2,ie one yellow, one black then you will have single channel mode operation. It will still use the full 1GB though

Many thanks, the more I reread the instructions the more hesitant I was...

Just to confirm.

If you have both sticks of ram in either the yellow or black slots. This is normal mode. The ram will run at 1Gb @ 400Mhz.

If you have one stick of ram in Dimm A1 and the other in Dimm B1 you are in dual channel mode, so the ram runs faster. Also you could use Dimm A2 and Dimm B2 to utalise dual channel mode, also.
