Datarate problems writing Video Cam movies to PC

Hi
I have installed a Firewire card into my PC so that I can record movies from my Digital Camera direct to my PC.
When I loaded the software it did a test on my Harddrive and said it was less than 4Mbits/sec. This is not true as the Harddrive is 7500rpm DeskStar 20GB.
My PC is a Hewlet Parkard P111 450MHz, which is well within the power requirements. I have tried other software, which will allow me to record, but they drop frames, for what I think is the same problem.
So, if my Harddrive is fast enough and my Processor is fast enough and my Firewire is fast enough, where’s the bottle neck and what will I have to do to fix it?

Run Disk Defragmenter.

Clear all temp files and remove any unwanted programs etc.

I reformated my harddrive and reinstalled Windows 98 second addition.
