Data transfer

My pc seems to be playing up whereby it wont allow me to copy items from my hard drive(lots of photos) on to cds.
I am getting a new laptop and therefore want to transfer the data on to that. I seem to remember seeing in Dixons a time back some sort of communication cable which can transfer data from one pc to another with a minimum of fuss (that will be the day!).

Am I correct in that info can be transferred this way or do I have to do it via memory stick? (will it matter if the 2 pcs have different microsoft operating systems?)

Assuming you are getting Vista on the new laptop you mean one of these, a data tansfer cable.

May be worth backing up precious photos to CD, USB stick or external hard drive but all this assumes that you can read files from your old hard disk.
