data exchange laptop to laptop

can i set up a network between two laptops to exchange files from my old laptop to my new one (both wifi enabled )without a LAN cable if yes would it be any slower.

I do not know of any WLAN adapter that offers peer-to-peer wifi. You need an Ethernet cable for that. Why is a cable not suitable for you?

just not got one at moment but will get one, thought may be able to swop data via wifi, new to wifi but its a learning curve thanks Kemistri

had a look at Ethernet cables do i need juts a ordinary one , why is there grey blue and yellow ones, dont tell me they just look good :~)

Neither of my laptops' adapters support adhoc. So check yours first before relying on it. Less than a pound for a cat5 crossover cable.

done a bit of reading up on this could do with a few opinions, ethernet cable or usb stick, and my old laptop is runing xp home and new one vista would that thruogh up any probs. all thoughts wellcome

also wuold it be a cat5 crossover cable i would need. oldest laptop is only 18 months old so it will have network adaptor ?
