Data error in reading drive c

i have an older computer which runs on Windows 98 and I can't get it to run in any made safe or otherwise. The message I keep getting is data error in reading drive c. Anyone know how to fix this I tried starting it in command prompt and ran scanreg/fix & it seems ok but this is beyond me. can you please make your replies in idiot prove language, thanks.

thank but I can't even get it to load to start never mind run the rest of the solution. Anyone have any other ideas.

You said you could start it in MS-DOS mode. Do that and enter

scandisk C:

When it has finished, accept the option to perform a surface scan.
