Dark Screen

  Rodz 14:17 20 Dec 2010

My Laptop is a IBM Thinkpad T42
When I boot up the screen sometime stay dark, so dark I cannot read or see the curser but can make out outlines so it has booted successfully.
By opening and closing the lid several times it comes on again.
I cannot think that this is the correct way to solve the problem.
Any ideas

Does it do it when the mains is connected? or only when on Battery power.

If when on battery power, I suspect a battery failure, else I would look at updating my graphic drivers.

Sounds like the LCD backlight is failing to switch on sometimes. This could be caused by the backlight tube(s)or by the inverter or by a bad connection between the tube and the mainboard. The latter sounds most likely if moving the case lid several times does the trick. Take a look here click here

You can download the hardware manual from click here

And backlight replacement click here

But first you should confirm that it is a problem with your display components by connecting an external display to make certain that it is not a graphics card issue.
