Damaged power supply?

A friend has just rung me in a panic. He turned his PC on, left the room for a few min's and came back to find it had filled the room with an acrid burning smell. From his description it sounds as if the power supply may have 'burnt out'. Assuming a change of power supply is needed what is the possibility that it could have caused further damage?, any ideas?

Yes there is a possibility that it may have caused further damage - the only way you'll find out however is to replace the PSU then see what happens.

Have a good sniff around inside the computer box first to confirm it is the PSU and not some other component. Also sniff the back of the monitor because these are favourites for catching fire.

Good luck

Paul.

Gents,

My mate replaced the PSU and his PC is back up and running like a dream, it's even cured a boot problem he was having, I thought it was caused by a faulty PSU at the time.

Thanks for your input.
