A friend of mine has asked me to have a look at their desktop PC as it wasn't working. After close inspection I discovered that the on board graphics card was badly damaged, hence, no display on monitor. Is anyone aware of a solution or is it simpler to replace the motherboard. Grateful for any advice.

Disable onboard graphics, and by a suitable replacement card....We need to know make and model of PC / Motherbiard to advise you further.

Also, what damaged the onboard chip? If this was a power surge / lightning strike etc. The whole board could be fried, hence replacement required.
