Have you installed or used third party software like Roxio. It may have taken over as the default software.

Finally, there are some other suggestions here including looking in device manager for a reset and reinstalling the drivers. click here

On the basis of trying the simplest and cost free things first, try unplugging the CD drive and plugging it in again. The most difficult part will be removing the side panel to get to it. It may have not been plugged in fully/dirt/whatever. Be sure to note which way round the cables go before removing.

Is the D drive a DVD/CD or HDD ?

If it is a CD then put a known good disc in preferably a commercial disk and see if it reads.

You could also check device manager to see if it is visible.

If it is a HDD - what make as when I lost my Maxtor D drive there is a utility MAXBLAST 4 to help recover it - I am sure WD / Fujitsu etc have same
