Crystal Oscillator on motherboard & Clock Drift

  Ashar 10:24 17 Mar 2004

I wish to know can a faulty crystal oscillator on mother boad cause a clock drift in sys tray? My system is not showing correct time for past 5 months. I adjust time every day & it remains okay while PC is ON. But I find it is losing time by 7 hrs the next day when I on my PC. My assembler on phone told me this could be a crystal oscillator problem. Is that true?
We here don't get good support from assembler & I'd not like to change my crystal oscillator if its only function is to show correct time & date in sys tray. I'd prefer to adjust it to correct time manually.
Can a faulty crystal oscillator cause any other adverse effect to system?(To Hardware or software)

please note: It maintain correct time while PC is on
I find it losing by 7 HRs when i switch PC next day. I again adjust it & find it losing the next day.
Assembler on phone told this could be Crystal Oscillator problem.
Should I change battery or oscillator to fix this?
With Best Regards
