CPU working overtime, help please

  Pyrothekilla 15:46 15 Jun 2004

For some reason my CPU keeps working at full speed even when I'm not doing anything with my PC.

Can anyone tell me why this might be?

Sorry johnnyrocker I'm slow with keyboard.

I'm running XP home.

I tried that test and it says that there are no problems with my system although the CPU is running at 61% (which I already know) which could interfere with the results.

This is annoying me.

OK, Ive narrowed the problem down to a process called SVCHOST.EXE
If I end this my CPU stops working overtime but my soundcard doesnt work, neither does my internet or a host of other things!
I've decided to re-install XP and if that doesnt work then Im formatting my HDD.

Thanks for the help people
