CPU usage very high

Hi..my computer often slows to a crawl and when I check, CPU usage is very high, sometimes 100%. I know it could be spyware, but I have Microsoft anti-spyware running all the time, and regularly scan with Adawre and Spybot. Last time it reached 100% I unplugged the modem, but there was no change. When I rebooted, usage returned to normal levels. Any ideas? Thanks.

I should have added that it reaches high levels even when I'm not running any particular program.

go to run type in msconfig, then select startup and have a look to see what is loading at start up.Look for any abnormal entries

Thanks stallion, but msconfig looks ok- nothing suspect.

Did scan, nothing untoward. I do use Shareaza file-sharing, but CPU usage is always high on explorer.exe.
