CPU Usage at 100%

A program I'm using will not shut down. It hangs. When I try task manager to shut the program down, CPU usage sits at 100%, the programme does not respond and so I have to re-boot the PC. I'm using XP Home SP3, Pentium (R)4, 2.8GHZ with 2.00GB RAM. Any ideas, anyone, as to what might be the cause. It could be a problem with the program I'm using but have experienced the same problem with others

A necessary "first step" would be to tell us what the program in question is??

Start - run type
msconfig
press ok
startup tab
check to see if ctfmon is ticked as one of the startup programs if so untick, click ok.

Reboot and tick the box "Do not show again.."

Your programs should now shut down OK.

Under processes.CPU.What program is using up most of the CPU.
System idle process should be showing about 96% that is normal.

Programme is Family Tree Maker. Should have said.

Hi Fruit Bat, ctfmon is not listed. However I do have a box ticked where there is no start up item and no command, but it does have a location, HKLM\SOFTWARE\MicrosoftWindows\Current Version\Run.

Hi buteman, System Idle is at around 95-97% and System Usage is at 4%. This I understand. What is happening when Systen Usage is at 100%?

In the list of processes CLI.exe is listed three times using a total of around 20,000k of Memory usage. I think it is to do with the ATI Radeon graphic card I use. Do I meed three of CLI.exe?. If not, which ones do I delete?

  kidsis 15:21 26 Dec 2009

processlibrary.com says it is not a necessary process, but check what they say before deleting any instances of the process.

  birdface 19:02 26 Dec 2009

System Idle process is 95-97% this is normal it meens that only 3-5% of the CPU is being used.So if any problems on the computer it is not the CPU that is causing them.

[Programme is Family Tree Maker]

If that was the problem next to Family Tree Maker
the CPU would show 100% and that is not happening.
May I suggest Running Malwarebytes free version and see if it finds any problems.Update it before running it.
