Just built new pc: P4 530j[3.0 gig] asus P5gpl m/b 6600gt graphics 512 meg ram xp pro standard hsf. When first started temp of cpu shown in bios was 95C. Changed thermal compound to artic silver and it went up to 105C. At this point the pc shut down. Any ideas?

What temp do P4s run at anyway? The installed cooler and heatsink must be grossly inefficient if a replacement is expected to bring the temp down from 105C to say, 50C. Couldn't there be something else wrong?
I would suggest birnie that either the heatsink and fan are not connected properly or theres not enough thermal paste being used or the heatsink and fan you are using is not for the processor you have. Failing that have you tried the Asus program for temps, it should be on your disk, if the PC stays on long enough to load it you can compare the temps it gets with the BIOS temperature. I'm wondering if the BIOS on the motherboard may not support the CPU you have installed, hence it is not reading the temperature correctly.
