CPU size confusion

  julas64 15:32 08 Jan 2006

Please can anyone help. I have just bought a computer for my son along with a game to play on it, but the game wont load. I dont know if it is a faulty game or that I have made a mistake on the computer spec. His computer is a Intel Celeron 2.79 GHz, 512 MB Ram and 50GB Hard drive. The game states requirements of Pentium 4 1.5 GHz or higher and 384MB Ram. I assumed that his computer would be fast enough because it is a 2.79. Have i made a mistake. I dont understand the difference between all the CPU's.
Many Thanks

Sounds as though it should cope. Do you get any error messages? What game is it?

Do you know what graphics card he has? This is a major factor especially if it is a 3D game, what game is it?

a celeron is not as good as a pentium 4.

"Hi, thanks for replying. The game is Doom 3 and the min system requirements are: 3D hardware Accelerator Card 100% direct x 9.0 compatible 64mb hardware accelerated video card and the latest drivers. The computer has direct X 9.0 and the graphics card is Intel Extreme graphics 2 with max memory 96mb. I have a similar computer and I managed to load it on mine but the game keeps crashing. And my son downloaded a demo of the game from the internet and this too keeps crashing, saying the game has encountered and error and needs to perform an emergency shutdown. Thanks"

This game requires a very meaty graphics card to run (even on low settings) and yours isn't up to it. You will need to invest in a new graphics card to play it.

P.S. If you could keep replys in the thread it will help other people who have the same problem

On board graphics will choke with these games, let's what's letting you down.

Any ideas which type of graphics card to buy, within reasonable price. And do you know if they are easy to install?

what computer have you got, brand?

or motherboard if you know it?

Best to check if the motherboard has a brown AGP slot to take a graphics card.

I hae a Dell Dimension 1100 Celeron 335 (2.80GHz, 533), 512 MB dual channel DDR400, 80GB hard drive (7200 rpm). Have no idea about the motherboard.
