cpu fan (arctic cooling)

  scoffsred 22:01 03 Dec 2005

i have set about replacing my cpu fan with the arctic cooling 2l model and i am having problems getting the computer to work
firstly after fitting the new fan i was met with the message cpu fan fatal error, so i went into bios and disabled the fan monitor and tried again with no luck. was getting past bios and onto windows welcome page , then the machine just cut out (fan working), so after a few tries and no luck i reinstalled the old fan and computer ran as normal. i have since downloaded speedfan and tried the arctic 2l fan in again but still i cant get past the windows welcome screen. HELP PLEASE

What processor and motherbaord do you have?

  PaulB2005 22:06 03 Dec 2005

What setting did you have the fan on?

Did you clean the CPU and replace the thermal paste each time?

  ahales42 22:24 03 Dec 2005

are you replacing just the fan or the whole cooling system?

no thermal paste will create a hot air pocket.
too much paste will act as a blanket.
sounds like one of the two,and your cpu is overheating

007al has said what i was thinking. Overheating.

"after fitting the new fan i was met with the message cpu fan fatal error"

Sounds to me like your Mobo is not detecting your new fan and is shutting the system down to avoid thermal damage, does the new fan have the same header and number of wires that the original fan has?

If your computer was running okay with the original fan why replace it? Has it got noisy? (bearing(s) starting to seize possibly)

the extra features is maybe a factor?

"what is header?"

Fancy name for plug.

Most fans have three wires, usually yellow red and black, there will be a notch in the plug so that it can only fit one way, compare the plugs (headers) on each fan, do the positions of the coloured wires in the plugs match?

Now having said all that, I just looked at a spare Intel fan I have, it has yellow green and black wires, the black wires positions match but that is it, so much for standardisation.

I hope I haven't confused the issue.

BTW, does the new fan actually spin up or is it dead? If so it may be defective.

The Arctic Cooling Fans run much slower than conventional types and sometimes the fan speed will be below the minimum threshold your bios monitor can detect.

This will throw up the "cpu fan fatal error" and the computer will shut down. This does not mean your cpu has overheated as the cooling at reduced revs should be OK.

I have used several Arctic Colling Fans and find them both quiet and efficient if a little bizzare in appearance.
