'CPU change' & 'CPU overspeed'

Following on from failures to POST, the times when my machine does remedy itself a warning, usually regarding the CPU has displayed.

The first time it told me that the CPU had changed and that I had to 'press Del to enter setup'.

The second time, this morning, having initially failed to boot, it started after a dozen or so attempts by me to get it running.

This time it told me that the CPU had overspeed' (or words to that effect.
Sure enough, on the POST results screen the CPU was being dispalyed as a XP1500+.
Again, required to enter setup, save settings (I changed nothing) and upon re-bottign the system correctly displayed a XP2700+.

Any clues as to what on Earth is going on?

I presume you've checked your Bios as it sounds like it could be the problem.

Yes. The BIOS version and the contents of so called "setup" appears to be fine, but sometimes it's as if the machine ignores or bi-passes the data in there.
