could a virus do this...

called to sort friends laptop - xp sp2
to find no files in windows/system and also explorer.exe missing from windows

copying said files from another laptop got it working after a fashion

a malwarebytes scan got rid of 55 items mostly backdoor

but could these above files have been removed by a virus?

A backdoor infection can give an attacker complete control of the infected computer. If this computer has been used for any online banking and financial transactions I would call the banks etc and change all your account numbers(just in case)It is said the best thing to do after such an infection is to do a complete reformat and reinstall of the OS.

pc had nothing of interest on - so no worries there - but not used on line - think infection if any came from memory stick
