Corrupt Hard drive

Apologies if this post is a bit long winded but hopefully this way someone can point me in the right direction. I recently tried to repair my PC using the installation disk (WIN XP PRO) but unfortunatly got nowhere fast. It picks up the partition but says its either corrupt or unsufficient space to install the OS, not that I wanted to do a full reinstall this is what happened after selecting the R for repair. I then tried removing the hard drive and putting it into another PC with a working copy of WIN XP Pro and made this the bad one the slave. I thought this way at least I can save the data on it. However it is not seeing any data on the disk. Is there anything else I can try or is there some software that will fix this. Or worst case scenario is the hard drive ready for the bin. All help appreciated.

download and make a diagnostic disk from the HDD site. Maxtor & Seagate do them.
