That is the same resolution that I am using with my 17" monitor, your monitor should handle that resolution ok.

Is it widescreen or not? You should run it at its native resolution if it is a TFT monitor.

there is nothing set in stone here, run it at the resolution you are comfortable with...

I used to use a 17 inch 4:3 TFT/LCD monitor, if my memory serves me correct it used to be 1280 x 1024 (BUT I CAN'T BE CERTAIN).

If you are not sure of the resolution then you can do what MAT ALAN suggests "there is nothing set in stone here, run it at the resolution you are comfortable with..."

Or you can alter the resolution to its highest available in the Control Panel, the below is describing the procedure in Vista (although XP should be very similar)

Control Panel\Appearance and personalization/Adjust screen resolution, in here you should see RESOLUTION and a slider with LOW-HIGH, slide this all the way over to high and this should tell you what the highest resolution that your Graphics card/monitor can handle, for example on my 21 inch Widescreen TFT/LCD monitor the highest resolution is 1680 x 1050.
