Copying video and audio to my laptop

I want to copy video tapes and audio tapes to my laptop so I can edit them and create DVD's/CD's. I've seen an advert for a cable that fits to a USB socket but I am unsure what should be on the other end. What's the correct term for one of these cables? What fitting should be on the end that connects to video/audio output? Where can I get one and how much should I pay?

thanks everyone.

hi yes you can. All you need is a WINTV USB KIT
you can get wintv usb from pcworld for about £65.OO
you get all the software and the tv reciver as well .

you will have to convert all avi files to mpg2
for dvd or mpg1 for vcd both of witch play on my dvd player , most vcd films take 2 cd`s
there as good as dvds but cheeper to produce.
