Copy Hard Drive

I have XP Home SP2 and would like to copy the whole of the Hard Drive to an USB external hard drive as a back up so that I can do a quick restore if my drive crashes.
Can anyone tell me how to do this, and if I need to restore to a machine that will not boot, can I just copy it all back? Don

Well providing the external hard drive has a letter (e:, f: g: etc) you may find xxclone will do the job. Download it free from click here

Haven't tried this with anything other than a second internal hard disk.

Have tried both Ghost & Acronis to an external USB HDD. Found Ghost was not reliable sometimes would not find external HDD.
Acronis TrueImage works perfectly every time: Would heartily recommend this program.
