Copy files from Win98 system tp Win XP

Out of seven Excel-97 files copied to new system I can only open one. Opening the others results in error message "Microsoft VBA - Access denied". None of the files contain macros and all have been checked with AVG.

How did you transfer them?

Which version of Excel are you running on the new system?

How do you know that they don't contain macros?

if your new system version of Excel is not compatible with the version of Excel your files were written with they will not read and Macros are very complex I would not imagine a run of the mill AV would be enough to pick up any encoded viruses if I have worded that wrong or got the wrong end of the stick please with all you taught me VoG™ correct me!

Excel 97 used on both systems. Copied direct to a USB flash drive and transfered. Can't be certain that there are no macros but I didn't write any when setting up the workbook. There are laots of formulae though.
