Copies of C-drive on my PC.

When I was browsing through explorer on my C: drive there were two folders for everything on the C: drive for example- 'Documents and Settings' 'Temp' etc.
I run a copy of XP Pro. As far as i know there is only one partition.
Could running a program create a copy?
The duplicate copy of the folder has a suffix of .WINDOWS' eg 'temp.WINDOWS'
Any ideas?
I have recently installled AVG and Zonealarm. Would this create a back-up?
