Converting large .MKV file to DVD

Windows XP Pro SP3; ASRock 775VM800; Pentium 4; 3GHz; 2Gb RAM

I have a very large, 9.2GB .MKV file that I would like to put on a dvd to watch on my telly. I have tried using DVD Flick, but I assume that the file is too big to go on the dvd.
How can I reduce the size of the mkv file so that it will fit on a 4.7GB DVD. I am only doing this the once, so I would like to use a free program. Finally, should I shrink the dvd and then convert the format, or the other was round.
Alternitively, is there any free ware which will let me split the large mkv file into two halves, and then burn to two disks?

Not certain but when coverted to mpeg2 for dvd it may well fit on a standrd dvd.Use flick and just get it to create an Iso image .Then see what size the Iso file is if its too big the you can use dvd shrink to compress.

To burn MKV to DVD is easy. But I think 9.2GB is too large to put on 2 DVD Discs. Maybe needs 2 DVD Discs.
