Can anybody suggest how to convert/slice etc a mpg file into several jpg files.

Simplist suggestion would be to play the MPG, then pause it at the desired location, press the PRIBT SCREEN BUTTON on your keyboard. Open a graphics editor eg Microsoft Photo Editor, the click Edit --> Paste As New Image, crop to the desired size & save as Picture1.JPG, repeat process for as many stills that you want.

TMPGEnc (Standard : Free) click here can do it.

To save you time here is how:

Start TMPGEnc and drag the mpg to the TMPGEnc window> Click 'File'> 'Output to file'> 'Sequence BMP/PPM/TGA/JPG file' choose a file name and location then 'save as' jpg :o)

Be warned though it converts every frame in to a jpg, if your mpg is 25fps and a lasts a while that is a lot of jpgs.

It may be an idea to split the mpg in to manageable pieces first (you can do this with (TMPGEnc).
