convert AVi to Mpeg

I downloaded a couple of Avi files off i-net which I would like to convert to a format that I can burn to DVD to allow my daughter to watch on her DVD.

Media Player plays Mpeg but does not recognise avi so an alternative would be a viewer that she could watch on her computer, via our home network.

I installed DivX which I thought would play the files but this appears not to be the case.

Can anyone suggest a converter or viewer that will do the trick.

On a search of this site I found a program called Player 1.4.0 which allowed me to view the files without any conversion but idealy I would like to burn to DVD so she can watch on her DVD player.
