Controversy about RAM

Although mobo says it supports 2 RAM sticks upto a max of 2GB memory which means 2 x 1GB sticks, local shops say that 1GB sticks are not appropriate for ordinary mobos and are only meant for special servers. What is this farce? If 2Gb RAM cannot be fitted into a mobo why does it specify so?

I think the shop is pointing out normal peeps don't need them. They have ECC which adds considerably to cost by having 50% redundancy for error checking & requires a suitable MB. If you've data that has to be absolutely error-free then use it. However are your programs error-free, I think not.
