I don't think you mean Control Panel?

If you mean the Task Bar, which normally sits at the bottom of the screen, click on a blank section in the middle of it, and drag it back down to the bottom.

Then right-click on a blank section and tick (click on) Lock the Taskbar - and you won't accidentally do it again.

no the task bar is at the bottom, this is a bar with all the things in control panel on it, and it is down the left side of the screen

Maybe a System Restore will put it back where it belongs?

Sounds like you have created a toolbar, then placed it on the desktop.

Right click taskbar, and look for your toolbars.

Delete the Control Panel entry...

If not, post back.

If the Control Panel still comes up as it should - then Ozy is probably correct.

Such accidentally created toolbars can be deleted with impunity.

Are you by any chance using Vista? If so perhaps you are referring to the Windows Sidebar, which can be set to the left or right of the screen. This shows you how to disable (and enable) it
