control key is treated as permanently depressed

my cat went walkabout on the key board and even after restarting the control key is treated as permanently depressed by any programes so i cant type anything in ....mouse operates fine though .....I did try system mechanic 6 (as it was free for a month) and aol chech up tool and it appeared to have worked but on restarting the pc the same problem returned ....has any knowledgeable soul got the solution to this dilemma I'm using win xp pro

Try Control Panel, Accessibility Options, Keyboard Tab and look at the 'sticky' and, perhaps, 'filter' key settings.
