connecting laptop to desktop

I would like to if possible connect my wifes laptop directly to my desktop pc to run some diagnostics and antivirus software to check it out can this be done and if so what cable to use

If both computers have a network connection the cheapest way would be a crossover cable and then simply "network" the two computers.

Not sure of the best way to go about running diagnostics and antivirus software though, maybe some of our more learned friends could help with that request.

If you network then you may transfer viruses spayware from one PC to the other.

Got a CD buner? download and burn antivirus antispyware progs to disk and install on laptop

Sound advice there, I only thought about that problem after having posted.
