Connecting to the Internet Wireless

Hi there.
I brought my first laptop a week or so ago.
When I first turned on the laptop it automatically searched and found various networks available to me. (it had an icon down the bottom right that indicated it wqs searching.

However, now the laptop isn't searching automatically or manually (atleast not the same easy to see way).
Does anyone know why this maybe? Could it be something to do with me loading up a norton firewall(free with the laptop) or possiblilly because I have one of those vodafone data 3g cards installed (again free with the laptop).

Thanks so much for your time.

You can rule out the Vodafone card - it's a modem device (listed in Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems). Mine causes no issues with wi-fi.

What's being listed as your preferred network? Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections.

By the way; are these wireless networks yours, or ones that are provided for open access? If they are privately owned - at neighbour's properties for example - then the amendments to the Wireless Act prohibit you from even accessing them.
