Connecting DVD player to laptop

Hi,

I need some tech advice about something…

I use a lot a DVD-R / DVD-RW discs to watch video files, but recently my computer caught a virus from one of them. Managed to fix the problem but I am worried it might happen again sometime.
To avoid it happening again I have the idea of buying a stand alone DVD player and connecting it to my computer using a HDMI cable.

My question is this - if I do this will it prevent any possibility of a virus transferring from a disc to the computer ?

My understanding is that an external DVD player (not a DVD drive) connected using HDMI will only use my computer screen to display what the DVD player is reading and there will be no data transfer between the disc and the computer. Is this correct ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank You.

The virus is gone. I don't know where exactly it came from or what the name of it is, but I am not looking to create more robust security.
My feeling is the virus may have been transmitted on a DVD-R / DVD-RW from work.
Not sure what you mean by downloads though ?
