configuring microphone

I've started to use a VOIP set up with free calls to landlines around the world.

However, although I can hear the other party fine, they seem to be having problems hearing me, the call keeps breaking up and fading out and sometimes they don't hear at all.

I've previously been using Skype, without too many problems.

My question is - can I do something to the PC so that it will register that I am plugging the microphone into the monitor, where I have a speaker plug? Before I was using the microphone outlet in the actual pc, but the cord between the pc and the desk top speaker isn't really long enough, hence the need to try and connect through the monitor instead of the PC.

How do I get this to work?

I think that plugging your mic into the sound card would be the best way. You can buy an extention cable from Maplins or some other shop for a couple of quid.
