config.sys cannot be disabled

I have been having intermittent Bsods at start up in Win98 se and want to do a clean boot as suggested by the microsoft KB. When I went into msconfig and unticked all the start up items and clicked on Apply, the tick in config.sys came back.

Additionally, config.sys is empty as I removed a couple of items in there but at start up they still appear as REMed out. What is going on?

By the way I've checked that the file is not set to read only and that I don't have any viruses.

When you remove items from config.sys using MSCONFIG - it simply rems them out.

If there are no active items in config.sys, then it plays no part in proceedings anyway.

If you want to try without a config.sys at all, in Explorer, rename it (temporarily) to, say config.aaa. You can always name it back afterwards.

Thanks DieSse. I realise it's not doing anything. I just wondered why I could not disable it.
