conexant modem/router 3818

I have been sent to you on this forum from Absolute Beginners. Hope you can help.

I have just acquired a wireless modem/router etec conexant pt-3818. In the installation instructions, such as they are, they recommend using the ethernet connection to install the router. But when I connect up using the ethernet cable my pc (WinXP) does not see the router. It does see it when I make the USB connection. Is it alright to do the setup using USB do you think?

Also I have been recommended to have the host computer hardwired on ethernet (for fast broadband connection for interative webgames.) If I install using USB will the ethernet connection work?

Someone has pointed me to the etec website to download Firmware updates - but the two there seem to be USB drivers not ethernet. Also I have seen absolute horror stories on other forums about etec firmware for this particular router.

Sorry for being so long winded.

Please see my post in your other thread and let me know what this device really is.

USB is not a networking interface.
