Concerning LSASS.EXE - for interest

  Flying Teddy 22:41 14 Jun 2003

Earlier today, fed up with ms defrag taking so long, I decided to use it whilst in safe mode to see if anything in the normal startup was slowing it down. As it happens, it was just as slow - in the region of 5.7 terra hours. But the interest happened after I restarted normally.

Having established an internet connection, I started to get a message from my Norton Internet Security that a remote system was trying to access C:/..../lsass.exe. It said that the origin was Microsoft and gave a numeric URL. Tracing the URL took me to the ftp site of a software company in Yorkshire, who seem to specialise in Carpet design and manufacture. Having agreed that this access should be permitted, the message started to come up every 40-50 seconds, even though access was granted each time.

I searched the PCA archive, and found one thread which led me to believe lsass.exe was pretty important, so I decided to do sfc /scannow which solved the problem.

My question is: what is lsass.exe, and why did safe/defrag cause a problem..? Any info/opinions/theories would be of interest! I'm running XP pro. HDD = 40G. ||-)

PS. Anybody else find defrag terminally slow?
