computer wont shut down

Help! For some reason my computer will not shut down. it sometimes does if the children have been using it and they log off from thier account, but i always have to either hold down the off button on computer or switch it off at the wall. I've tried task manager, logging off and trying to shut down from the kids account but nothing seems to work. i've also noticed the fan sometimes makes a noise, not often, but it didnt do this before. Are there any quick fixes - not too technical - that you can suggest. I have a HP media centre, windows xp sp2, all ms updates have been downloaded. any help you can give would be appreciated.

This may cure it. It's actually aimed at SLOW shutdown problems, but might be worth a try:

1- Start/Run and type Regedit
3- Click on “Control”
4- Select “Wait to kill service timeout”
5- Right click and select “Modify”
6- Set to a lower value than 2000
7- A setting of 200 will be sufficient

Normal setting is 2000 but can safely be reduced to 200 for a quick shutdown. Sometimes in PCs, including my own, an extra nought is added on to make it 20000. Not sure why this happens but when it does it leads to a very long shutdown time.
