Computer settings keep changing.

As an elderly pensioner, I build and repair computers for all my family. Up to now I have had no problems diagnosing any faults.
However the settings on my eldest daughters computer continue to change, for no reason, when the system is switched off and on. When you switch the system on and it is booting up, a message appears on the monitor stating that the CPU (processor)settings have changed, and to correct them. You can carry on working on the PC only after pressing a keyboard key. Due to this message I have entered the bios and rectified the CPU settings, which allows the computer to work normally, UNTIL you switch it off, and leave it for any length of time, when the message about the CPU timing reappears, after switching it on again.
I would like to know whether the fault lies in the processor, or the motherboard.
Thanks for any advice given.

Possibly the mobo battery needs changing.. cheap enough to try.
