computer screen keeps going blank!

  AndyC121 17:08 23 Jul 2006

When playing particular computer games (CIV IV and Oblivion) after a short while my screen just goes blank, and the power button goes from green to amber. The computer itself seems to carry on as normal. If I am playing Football Manager or just using itunes the screen never goes blank.

I have to turn the computer off and then on again to re-use the computer, there then appear to be no apparent problens (unless I try and play either of the games again).

Any help on how to solve this would be much appreciated.

System specs please Andy.

  AndyC121 17:32 23 Jul 2006

sorry, the specs are.....

4600 AMD Processor,
2 gb memory
XFX 7800GT graphics card

I also have a Zalman cooler over the graphics card - I say this as I suspect over heating is the problem, though this is a guess

Probably totally wrong but try disabling any screen saver you may have and see if that helps.

Can you get back to Windows by using Alt + Tab or can you bring up Task Manager with Ctrl + Alt + Del?

I have two hard drives, a raptor 36 gb, and maxtor 300gb - i noticed that the Raptor (one I keep games on) was getting full so I have freed up some space - not sure if this is part of the problem, though it wasn't affecting the Football manager game.

Thanks for the ideas

I will disable the screen saver, but I have been actively using the computer when the problem has occurred.

And Ctrl+Alt+Del has not worked.

If the cooler is doing its job properly i would suspect faulty ram.
Do you have 2 1gb modules inserted ?

As you only need 512mb to run Oblivion, maybe trying one stick of ram at a time.Or try Memtest click here

thanks for the response.

yes I have 2 1gb modules - the problem only appears to be in particular games, would faulty ram not have an effect on all programmes?
