Computer refuses to boot

  Curio 10:19 20 Feb 2005

Have searched archives but found nothing for assistance in resolving this problem. Lots of maybes but nothing definite.
Son Switched on computer this morning and could not boot. last 3 lines of POST screen - Searching for boot record from floppy .. not found. 2nd line Searching for boot record from CD/DVD-0 .. not found. Third line Searching for boot record from IDE-0 .. Maxtor 6Y080l0 ok. Presumably line 3 refers to his hard drive. Booting attempt using floppy rescue disk resulted in statement - remove floppy and press any key to continue. He did this and was returned to the above 3 lines. Does not seem to be able to boot in safe mode. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. Win XP SP2.

HAve you got a XP CD?

With CD in drive wait for message "Press to Boot from CD" and run recovery consul

Using Recovery Consul

sounds as if something may have got corrupted or hard drive has failed. put win xp cd into cd/dvd drive and reboot pc. if all goes well you should be able to re-install windows or a rescue if its something that has been corrupted. if its a hard drive problem thats a different story.

one of the other members should be able to give you more detailed explanation on what to do.

XP disc inserted, files loaded. Get to 'R', press that and computer says to quit Recovery Console by typing exit. Complied with this and finish up back at the beginning of this procedure. What is he doing wrong - if anything?

Start with the Windows CD in the drive. You will now see a screen message saying "Press any key to boot from CD", press the spacebar and a message appears informing you that "Set-up is inspecting your hardware configuration". This will be replaced by a blue screen, press Enter and you should see a "Welcome to Setup" menu, press Esc to continue; important, do not press R for Repair as this will start the Recovery Console.

The Windows Licence Agreement will now be displayed. Press F8 to signify acceptance and the next screen will list your operating system (Windows XP). Select it and proceed to the next screen, which will have the option "To Repair the Selected Windows installation press R". Hit the R key and the installation begins.

Boot sector virus? Have you tried booting with an AV rescue floppy? You may be able to download one, or create one on your own PC and use it to start his.

Also, maybe worth a try going back into XP repair console and typing

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0 <Return>

Whichever way he got to the press 'R' point he was returned to the Quit Recovery Console by the instruction type Exit scenario. Finally went for Windows Setup and got message Hard Drive was Overfull, damaged or currupt and the Drive needed to be formatted. Has now formatted the Drive and is currently installing drivers etc and muttering about XP under his breath. Thanks to all.
