Hi

Can anyone tell me what it costs to leave your computer on all the time.
Pennies or £££

Depends on lots of things:

cost of electricity per unit

rating of the PSU

load on the psu - this depends on the components in the PC.

is pennies.

following on from Diodorus Siculus you could turn everything else in the property off and count the no. of units used over a 15 mins period and multipy by 4 for the watthours or kilowatt hours and multiply by your cost per kWh.

"The answer to your question is pennies."

Per day / per hour / per minute or what?

Somehow I'd have though it would be more than pennies per day.

thanks

I have an energy monitor adapter which I have set to tell me what wattage is being used by my computer and it reads about 220 watts most of the time. Depending on what is being used or run.
That equates to about 4½ hours for 1 unit of electricity. With electricity approx 10p per unit that's 2.2p per hour.

Extrapolating from that though
24 hours = 52.8p
31 days = £16.37
Which isn't pennies in my mind.

Smiler - thanks for that - much appreciated.

Hmmm three networked computers, two that my teenage children leave on most of the time they are out! No wonder my electricity bill is so high. Thank you Smiler, things are going to change.

When doing these calculations you must take into account that most of the consumed power ends up as heat. In the winter this can offset your heating costs assuming that your central heating is thermostatically controlled; in summer it won't have much effect unless you have air conditioning.
