Computer keeps freezing

  chartwise 18:59 25 Aug 2006

Once the machine has booted up, all the icons seems to appear very slowly.
Also when online if I click on View > View Source it takes an age

If I then go online everything seems OK. Now comes the problem:
If I go offline and close the browser window, the window closes but it still leaves the icon in the taskbar.
If I try to open any software (even to go into Task Manager) nothing happens. Only the cursor will move and it will machine will not close down from using start and then and Turn Off Computer.

I have to manually switch the computer off.
The when I re-boot the machine it comes on the blue page of death to scan the disc.
It states that it is to check for inconsistancy of the disc.
When it has scanned it always starts with the following. C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH\????|????.pf the first allocation not available and will be truncated.
????= This is always followed by the software I was trying to open.

After doing all this the computer is then OK.
I have to go through this routine everytime I boot-up.

Can anyone please help??

All help much appreciated

Hi Rob
I just have Antivirus, Spyware and the Microsoft updates icon running but these have run for a couple of years now without any problems until recently.
