If I save a shortcut that I have saved to my desktop It can disappear if my wife deletes it from her account or vise verser. How do i stop this happening? We don't want each others shortcuts and I can't see how if you delete from one account that it shouldn't happen on the others account. I'm on windows 7 and IE9.

thank you

Create another user account so you both have your own desktop. Then you just have to left click 'start' /shut down right arrow/switch user account to switch to personlised desktop

Look in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\programs and cut the program icon from there. Paste it into C:\Users[YOUR USER NAME]\Desktop.

just to make clear that we have our own user accounts and own desktops, but the icons disapear from the others desktop if a deletion is made from the other one.

It is to do with where the icons are kept. If they are public then if you delete one thn it will not be visible to any other user either. If it is in the user account then only that user will see it. See Customise desktop icons for users

Did you read my post and link?

Right clicking any desktop icon and select properties and that will give you the location of the exe file for the program.

If you find the public folder then you should find the shortcuts. You will also probably be able to copy and paste from their into the respective user folders.

Sorry, I was in a rush. I do it by clicking the start button the right clicking the All Programs and choosing explore all users.
