Computer freezes when USB device inserted

  Da-B-Man 15:49 31 Mar 2005

hi there
ive had this problem for years but just ignored it as i didnt use my usb slots for anything.

basically i start my computer up and for example if i wanted to insert my usb pen disk into my usb slot the whole computer freezes and i have to restart.

the only way my computer doesnt freeze is if i insert the usb device before switching on my computer.

Hope someone can help...Cheers

Do you have any warnings displayed in "device manager"?

Da-B-Man, hola

I’d have a go at reinstalling the USB controller drivers anyway.

I have a 4 year old computer running Windows2000
that has the same problem the problem in my case was power i resolved it by plugging a USB2 hub into the USB2 card and powering it up never had any problems after however i did not plug my broadband modem into the hub.

control panel -- system -- hardware -- device manager -- usb devices right click and uninstall.

1. click action scan for hardware changes or

2. reboot

XP will find the usb devices find install the drivers
