I have 2 hard drives which were C drives on my & my daughters PCs. Can anyone recommend a way of ensuring that there is no way anybody can retrieve personal information from them when I dispose of them - probably on ebay?

A hard drive is never going to be fully wiped, but those programs will do a good job of it. If it's going to be sold to an average person on eBay, then if you run eraser programs on it that should be enough. It's usually only professional organisions such as the police and data recovery experts that can retrieve data after one of those programs is used. The best way is to erase it and snap all the pins off the drive to make sure no one can plug it into a computer as this is what I had to do at work - but this is only if you're going to dump it. If it's going on eBay then an eraser program that fills the disk with zeros should be enough.
