Compaq Armada e500 hard drive problem

When the laptop boots up the laptop makes a lot of crunching noises and goes no further than the compaq welcoming screen. I am assuming that it is completely useless now, but wondered if...

1)Am I able to retrieve the data from this hard drive? and...

2)Is it possible to install an IBM Travelstar hard drive from an old Dell Laptop into the armada e500 to replace the (presumably) useless Toshiba one that is in it already, and if so how would I go about that.

Thanks

1 - possibly if you take the drive out and connect to a caddy which accepts 2 1/2 inch drives

2 - possibly also and the only way to find out is to try; teke out the current disk and try putting in the Dell one. The only possible problem is that Dell don't always use standard components.
