Which version of Windows?
disk cleanup? If you mean the facility in System Tools, it may be sulking because too many files are open somewhere.

I suggest you stop using "d c."
Download and install the freebie and very efficient CCleaner.

USE C CLEANER REGULAR NO OPEN FILES

Try a defrag to tidy up the disc. There may not be enough contiguous space.

Better to include the nature of your problem in the thread title rather than COLLIWOBBLES, which means absolutely zero to anyone seeing it...:-)

Do you disable your AV before using disk cleanup?

  Stuartli 17:53 11 Oct 2006

Another possibility is that you have a screensaver and it's kicked in.

  Diemmess 17:57 11 Oct 2006

If you run CCleaner regularly you don't need to open disk cleanup at all.
Does CClean run through at present OK?

Without making a silly point, there must be many files open just running Windows, but have you had a look via msconfig to see just what is running at startup?

Sometimes when things get difficult it can make a difference to come off the net, then disable AV and firewall while you try disk management procedures such as disk cleanup or more particularly the Defragmenter.

How much free space is actually available on C:
has there been any major change recently to hard or software?
